I took this picture because Ayden wanted to see the "A" and "B" the nurses wrote on his back. I did NOT just do it for the blog, so don't judge me. Doesn't it make you feel itchy?
I took Ayden to the allergist this morning. His school wouldn't take my word for it-which I understand-so we had to act quick and get him tested and get the paperwork sent in to his school. After all, it is Lenten season, so fish gets served on Fridays. I learned a lot more this visit than last year. Mostly because Ayden is so much more grown up now. The whole time I was talking to the doctor, he sat still in his own chair and didn't interrupt once. Last year I could hardly hear anything the doctor was saying and Ayden was ALL OVER THE PLACE. That's the difference between age three and age four. Anyway, we re-tested all of the food allergies from last year and this time added codfish and shellfish-which he was not tested for last year, because it wasn't a concern of ours at the time. He got 16 pricks total. Most of them were different nuts, then he also had an egg, wheat, and some more I'm not sure of.
The verdict:
1. He IS allergic to the codfish-which represents all fish, even fish sticks.
2. His reaction to eggs was less this year than last, so he's building an immunity to them. He doesn't have any issues with eggs, which means he's allergic, but tolerant to them.
3. Nuts are still the enemy. He had two huge welps from the peanut and one other (I forgot which). The doctor actually said, "Whoa nelly!" in response to those two. Normally an allergic reaction to the pricks is less than a centimeter big. Those two nut reactions were at least an inch.
4. Ayden's reaction to the fish the other night was minor anaphalactic shock, and we should have given him the Epi-Pen first then the Benedryl. You live, you learn. We now have six Epi-Pens instead of just two, so we can always have one ready to go.
So there you have it. Ayden did so well through the whole thing. He didn't complain at all. He just wanted to scratch his back really bad. He's currently passed out from the Benedryl, snuggling with Ian.

Yikes! That sounds scary. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Allison's allergies will just go away instead of get worse and multiply like Ayden's.
oh my goodness!!! as far as i know i don't have any food allergies, and neither does jase--so far. poor ayden! his back looks terrible!!! i hope all his "torment" will benefit him in the future with avoiding attacks!
Crazy! I can't imagine having to go through all that with your kids! And to always be on the look out for what they might be allergic too! Crazy!
Poor little guy. Im glad he is old enough now to be able to understand to say no to fish. I was going to ask you in your last post what you found out. Thanks for the update. I hope you grow out of your allergies Ayden.
Geez. Food is scary! Hopefully fish isn't something that he adores- then it would be that much harder! I know people who love the foods they're allergic to and it makes it so hard to resist eating them even though it's dangerous for them to eat those things. Poor guy. I hope that that's the end of your surprise discoveries- maybe one day in the future he'll be able to eat and enjoy those things again. Other than that, has your week been better so far? I've been thinking about you!
what about the shell fish? i have a friend who is allergic to fish but not shell fish... for most people with food allergies it is usually the otherway around.
Ayden, you're a tough little dude! Those allergy tests are TORTURE!!
Lexi, things are going much better, thank you! I've been feeling great with this forced diet and exercise.
EBeth, he is not allergic to shellfish, so he's backwards like your friend.
oh good. my understanding is that, at least in South Louisiana, shellfish is harder to avoid than fish.
Ouch to Ayden, looks like a big mosquito was having you for lunch. Hope the itch went away fast. Paw paw is allergic to lots of things too, mostly outdoor stuff like grass, hay, grain, pollen, some trees.
Poor Ayden. That allergy test did not look fun.
Poor baby!! At least y'all know now and "Knowing is half the Battle" (G.I. Joe).
