This morning I took Ayden to the doctor to confirm if he is wheezing or just has bad allergies. Every time he gets sick it escalates to wheezing. Last year he was prescribed an inhaler, but his doctor didn't want to call it the dreadful "A" word at that point. Well, that day has arrived. I knew it was coming, since I'm the only child of 5 without asthma, and my dad has suffered with it his entire life. I felt like the room was closing in on me when the words came from Dr. Tara's mouth. She has asthma, so I know it's a personal issue for her and she doesn't jump into diagnosing the big "A" unless she's sure of it. Everything went into slow motion and I felt like I was watching myself in third person. I had two opposite inner thoughts as she was talking. The first told me, "NO, NOT ASTHMA! I KNEW THIS WAS COMING, BUT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO MIRACULOUSLY DISAPPEAR!" The second (which I liked better) said, "it's no different than before. Now you know it's definitely the problem, and you can take action faster to help him. You'll find a good medicine for him, and he'll be fine." So now he's on Singulair, which is made to prevent allergies AND asthma. Voila! Also, we're changing his inhaler from Albuterol to Xopenex which is Albuterol without the side effects. Wish us luck. We're on a three week trial with his new medicines to see if they work for him. I hope they do, so we don't have to keep experimenting. Thank goodness for modern medicine, so we can help him as much as possible. Hopefully it will fade away as he grows older.

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. But at least you know what it is and it is manageable. Lots of kids grow out of Asthma...hopefully Ayden will be one of them. He and Tristan can be the little nerdy kids who have to bring their inhalers with them everywhere! Just kidding! By the way....I am working on my 7 random facts.
LOL!! They'll be the non-athletic artistic lady killers!!
i'm really more of a hugger in these sorts of situations... so [hug]
I recall Chris Rock joking about using Robitussin to fix any ailment you have- maybe it would work for Ay ;-)... Just kidding (of course).
****Chris Rock: When I was a kid, I had to be near-death to see a doctor, so my daddy got into the habit of putting Robitussin on everything, and I mean EVERYTHING!
[Impersonating his father and himself]
Chris Rock: Daddy, I got asthma!
"Well here, take some Robitussin!"
Daddy, I got cancer!
"Here, take some Robitussin!"
Daddy, I broke my leg!
"Here, put some Robitussin on it... that's right, let the Robitussin sink in there."****
One thing's for sure, I think I'd rather take the medicine the dr. gave me than Robitussin- that stuff is nasty! Troy gags at the mere mention of it!
I hope Ay grows out of it- what a bummer to have as a kid!
Sorry Stacy! A solid diagnosis is good, though. Good medicine will make him feel better! Kids (especially Ayden) are so resilient.
Sorry to hear about your son. He comes from tough genes. I am sure he will be fine.
Well, at least you do know for sure now what it is - that will help a lot with treatment. I totally feel your pain for the ihaler - Dawson was only on his inhalers for three weeks and it was a nightmare! He hated using the face mask (not that I blame him) but at least he is doing better. I didn't even know Albuterol had side effects - that's what Dawson was on!
For Ayden it made him either hyper or loopy.
Lexi, love the quote. I actually have been giving him pediatric Robitussin, but it didn't work as well for him as it did for Chris Rock.
Let these things be not stumbling blocks but trials that we over come to mold us into our potential.
Welcome to the club, Stacy! Son was diagnosed when he was really little and has been on Singulair, Zyrtec, Nasonex/Flonase/Nasacort, and Albuterol ever since. He also has to take Pulmicort and Prednisolone when he gets sick or has an asthma flare up.
With asthma, you can't let ANY sinus infection go untreated or you end up with a bronchial infection and possibly pneumonia. uggghh!
I suggest you take him to see Dr. Prem Menon here in town. He's the best of the best for dealing with asthma, allergies, and immunology. Son has been seeing him for the past seven years and that has made all the difference in the world. I can get his info to you if you like. Just let me know.
Make sure any cough meds you give him don't have a cough suppressant in them. IF he has asthma, it can make things worse.
I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis; things like this are always so different when it's your own.
I like the Chris Rock thing that Lexi put up. It reminded me of my family. My dad's magic cure-all is a wet rag. I bit my tongue once on the trampoline doing flips, and he told me to lay down and put a rag on my head, like that's going to help the bleeding. Any time we were sick/hurt and mom wasn't around we were getting a wet rag. And my pappaw sprays Lysol on everything, sore muscles, cuts, etc. I never let him spray me though.
Thank you for your support, ladies. I know I sound like a big baby complaining, but I had to watch all of my siblings suffer when they were young, and my poor mom would get so worn out helping all of them. I actually would get jealous of the attention they all got, and I would wish that I could get sick.
Poor little Ay. Unfortunately, I don't think ANYTHING will slow him down :)
